Firstly you can't go past good skin prep! Have thoroughly clean skin and then start with a really good primer. You can get primers that reduce redness in skin tone and a concealer will reduce the colour out of a zit to make it less noticeable.
If you are worried because you have really bad acne or pitted acne scarring then going with airbrush is going to give you the best result. This is because it will give you the coverage you need without layering the makeup on, if you can imagine when you apply with a spinge or a brush you are actually taking off the top coverage and just pushing more makeup into the pitted areas and creases. For this reason airbrush is also great for older skins where the skin may be crepe like or have wrinkles.
